It’s only fulfilling when you carve your own path

David_-_The_Death_of_Socrates

Imagine you’re in the middle of a desert, and I ask you to collect rocks. You’d probably think I’m crazy and move on with your day.

Now, what if I offer to pay you for it? Maybe you’d be more willing, thinking about what you could buy with the money.

But if you’re a geology student, I might not even need to ask you. You’d already be excited to explore the desert, eager to find rare rocks. That’s the power of meaning in education.

When something connects with what you care about, you’re much more motivated to do it. But when it feels pointless, like picking up rocks for no reason, it becomes a burden.

Why Traditional Education Falls Short

Research shows that many high-achieving students lose their motivation as they progress through school. Four studies shed light on why this happens:

  1. Lack of Meaning in the Work — Students feel that what they’re learning doesn’t matter (Balduf, 2009).
  2. Work Unrelated to Personal Goals — They can’t see how school tasks connect to their dreams (Glynn et al., 2009).
  3. No Freedom to Learn in Their Own Way — The structure of school doesn’t let them explore their interests (Reeve & Jang, 2006; Reeve, 2009).

These problems create a sense of disconnection, turning education into something to endure rather than enjoy.

How to Take Control of Your Education

The good news is, you don’t have to stick to that traditional path. You can create an education that excites and motivates you by focusing on these three things:

  1. Find Meaning in What You Learn
Ask yourself, Why am I learning this? Look for the deeper value in what you study. If you’re learning something like math or history, think about how these skills can help you achieve personal goals. Connect the dots between your subjects and the world outside of school.
  2. Follow Your Interests
If the formal curriculum doesn’t align with what excites you, go beyond it. Today, we have endless resources to explore whatever we’re passionate about — online courses, blogs, forums, and YouTube videos. Let curiosity guide your learning.
  3. Work at Your Own Pace
Freedom to learn your way is crucial. When you’re not confined to the rigid structure of traditional education, you can spend more time on what matters and less on what doesn’t. Maybe that means spending weeks diving into a topic that fascinates you or skipping over something you find irrelevant.

Balancing Structure and Curiosity

Freedom in education doesn’t mean abandoning structure altogether. Like everything in life, it’s about balance. You can still use discipline to keep yourself on track, but allow yourself the freedom to change course and chase what matters to you. When you’re genuinely interested in something, learning becomes an adventure, not a chore.

The Joy of Learning Freely

There’s magic in following your own path, and you never know where it might lead. What begins as a small curiosity can turn into something life-changing. And because it’s self-directed, there’s no guilt, no pressure — just the pure joy of learning.

Learn what you want, when you want, and you’ll discover the freedom that makes education fun again.
